Telecommunicator Leah Welch

 

Hello, and welcome to the Oak Island Communications Center snuggled inside of the Oak Island Police Department. At the present time our center is made up of:

  • 1-LT. over communications
  • 1-911 Database Administrator
  • 6 Full Time telecommunicators
  • 5 Part time telecommunicators

 

Some of our responsibilities include the following:

 

  • Answering 3 911 lines and 6 administration lines
  • Entering calls into our CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) System
  • Dispatching personnel to a specific address or location
  • Communicating via radio with police officers, firefighters and water rescue personnel
  • Communicating with the public via telephone when they have questions or want to speak with an officer to file a report
  • Interacting with the public when they come to the Police Department for numerous reasons such as obtaining forms for various reasons, wanting to file a complaint, asking questions  and directions.
  • Entering and removing warrants, stolen articles, stolen guns, people and etc.

 

We dispatch for the Oak Island Police Department, Caswell Beach Police Department, Oak Island Fire Department, Yaupon Fire Department and Oak Island Water Rescue. We are also the answering center for Animal Control calls and after business hours for the Water and Sewer Departments. We also notify the United States Coast Guard of Oak Island of any water emergencies. 

 

 

 

Telecommunicator-Tina Evans - Data Base Administrator 

Tina has been with the department total of 13 years. During that time she has

obtained several certifications.

She presently holds a NC Sheriff's Training and Standard Certification for Telecommunicators, Communications Training Officer Certification,and Communications Supervisor Training

through the NC Justice Academy.

Her current responsibilities include, 911 database administrator, TAC officer, Training Officer,

and 911 telecommunicator.

 
 

Lavonne Baker

Telecommunicator Lavonne Baker

 Lavonne has been with the Oak Island Police Department  since July 10, 2006 and is assigned to D Squad. She moved here from Mansfield, Ohio. She was a dispatcher for the Ashland County Sheriffs Office in their combined dispatch for 2 ½ years. She was also a volunteer dispatcher for the Mifflin Township Fire Department for 4 years. Her North Carolina certification is DCI (Database of Criminal Information). Lavonne is the Assistant TAC for our department and also a training officer for communications. Lavonne is married to Jack Baker Jr. and they have 3 children. Lavonne went through the online program through AIU (American Intercontinental University) for her Associates in Business Administration and is hoping to finish pursuing that degree in the future.


 

Leah M. Welch has been with the Oak Island Police

Department since September of 2006 and

she is assigned to A Squad.

She relocated here in June of 2006 from Gaston County.

She previously worked for Gaston County Police where she

was a senior telecommunicator/trainerand

was with them for 7 years.

Her certifications are DCI (Database of Criminal Information)

EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatcher)

and she has her CPR certification.

Leah is married to David Welch and they have 3 children.

Bob Pauley

Bob Pauley Born and raised in Canton,Ohio. Moved to Brunswick County, North Carolina in 1988. Work at the Progress Energy Nuclear Plant untill 1999 and then came to work for Oak Island Police Department. I am married and have to boys and curently live in Boiling Springs.

 

  Telecommunicator Michael Stutz

 My name is Michael Stutz and I have been employed with

the Oak Island Police Dept. since September 17, 2007 I

have worked the power shift for B and D Squads.

I have been married for 16 years to Tammy Stutz and

I have a 6 yr old daughter.

We moved to Oak Island in 1995 from Lexington, NC

and started a cleaning business on the island and

Southport.While I lived in Lexington I worked for a

printing company for 10 yrs.

I have volunteered for most of my life. I have volunteered at Aircraft museums in

Asheboro and Charlotte and at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.

Since I have lived here I have beenwith the Coast Guard Aux. for 3 yrs and I am now a member of Yaupon Beach Fire Dept.

Oak Island Water Rescue and Oak Island EMS at Station 1.

When I’m not busy volunteering I reenact with a civil war artillery unit from Oak Island. Among other things historical, I enjoy serving with the people in this line of work

and serving the citizens of Oak Island.
